Store's £10,000 pledge to bring back shoppers

Monday 30 June 2008

BOOTHS supermarket is to help fund a campaign to attract shoppers back to Ripon.

The company has agreed to contribute £10,000 towards a major promotional campaign for the city once work on its Ripon store is finished.

Last week the Gazette reported how Ripon City Partnership was mounting a 'rescue plan' to help hard-pressed businesses suffering as a result of disruption caused by the construction of the Booths supermarket and other shops west of the Market Place.

It is hoping to raise £10,000 from local traders to fund an advertising campaign designed to tell shoppers that Ripon is 'still open for business' despite the upheaval.

However, the money being pledged by Booths and the city council is unlikely to be made available until work on the west of Market Place development is completed and everything is 'back to normal'.

Meanwhile, some of Ripon's small businesses are seeking a rate relief to compensate them for lost business.

In an open letter to Harrogate Borough Council this week they say that building work on the new supermarket has caused traffic chaos and as a result of the disruption, shoppers are staying away.
